Last year on the Sunday before school was to start on Monday, I was at the end of the line in Staples at the back of the store with a grimace on my face like the rest of the folks who waited to the last minute to get ready for “Back to School”. Everyone in town was at Staples because the prepared people bought up all the glue sticks, crayons and washable markers at Wal-Mart! As I waited in line, I made a promise to myself that this year would be different! No more last minute. No more failure to PLAN!
It was the infamous “tax-free weekend” in North Carolina this past weekend. I got up early on Friday morning before work and went to Wal-Mart to get my girls’ school supplies. My oldest had scooped out these adorable girly composition books with the word “Love” and with peace-signs on them. (She is in love with all things “Peace-sign”.) Anywho, Wal-mart had the supply lists for our school system printed out so I was in and out of there in 35 minutes!! Whoot Whoot!
No more last minute back of the line stuff for this DIVA!
Ok so I bought the school supplies and I have seperated them for each girl, but there are still some other things I need to do to help our “Back to School” season be a success! Ya’ll know I like to KISS (keep it simple sista), so here are the 3 things that I am going to work on this week to help decrease the “drama meter” this “Back to School” season:
1. Inspect the bookbags and lunch bags. We bought new bookbags last year so I am quite sure we can reuse those. My oldest used her current lunch bag for 2 school years, so it probably needs to be replaced. Both of them could probably stand a good cleaning inside and out!
2. Start getting back on an early bedtime routine. Since the girls have not had to go to school, it has basically been like a sleepover every night! They have stayed up way later than we would EVER let them during the school year. As an only child, I have to admit how cute it is that the girls have each other to play with every night. Of course, some nights involve more fighting than playing (LOL!) My goal this week is to have them in bed by 9:00pm.
3. Talk positively to the girls about going back to school. I have to be honest, the thought of homework and projects makes me want to throw-up! However, the way I view going back to school will definitely have an effect on the girls. My oldest already expressed some anxiety about third grade. She said that her teacher pretty much scared them to death about the EOGs (end of grade testing) that begin in the third grade. EOGs are North Carolina’s way of putting a band-aid on the fact that so many of our schools are not performing at the national standard–all part of the federal “no child left a dime” I mean “no child left behind” program. So, I plan on having a conversation with the girls preparing them for going back to school all while being assuring of their fears. (We will probably have to have this conversation a couple of times before school actually starts.)
So, in celebration of the fact that I am NOT waiting to the last minute to prepare for school this year, I am giving away a $20.00 Wal-Mart gift card to help another Diva!

I would LOVE to win the gift card because my youngest is Special Needs and we don't have to spend dollars on his school supplies, so this year for his 5th Birthday party (in two weeks), we are having guests bring school supplies in leiu of gifts and donating them to the local “Teacher Supply Warehouse”. A place where teachers can go shop for supplies for their class rooms and can save a bit out of their own pockets!!!
I would love to take the $20 gift-card and buy supplies to add in the pile of goods to be donated!!! Thanks for the awesome opportunity to play!!!

Well, I hate to say that *should* win… How about why I'd like to win? I'd use the giftcard to get school supplies for Operation Christmas Child. I don't have kids myself, but I love buying school supplies (I guess I'm weird…). So being able to donate them just makes it great.

I'd lobe to win this card because back to school expenses usually exceed our expectations. Though there are many sales, and I appreciate Walmart's prices, back to school shopping can stress my wallet.
