A Harvard Women’s Health Watch survey found that more people are sleeping less than six hours a night. Chronic sleep loss can contribute to health problems such as weight gain, high blood pressure, and a decrease in the immune system’s ability to fight off disease. The American Academy of Pediatrics clearly states that children need more sleep than adults for full daytime functioning and healthy long-term development. For school aged children, like my girls, the American Society of Sleep Medicine recommends 10-11 hours of sleep! WOW!
Getting to bed early has always been one of our family struggles. The girls want to watch one more show and I can totally lose myself in a blog post or surfing the Internet. Getting up in the morning was NO FUN last school year. Many mornings, I was achy and tired and the girls had much “tired diva attitude”. This school year, we have decided to go to bed earlier as a family.
Going to bed earlier as a family means that we have to have some rules:
1. Have regular bedtime and enforce it even on weekends (at least for the girls). Girls in the bed by 8-8:30 and parents in bed by 10pm.
2. Electronics black-out an hour before bedtime.
3. Begin the bedtime routine about 30 minutes before our planned lights out time. (I have found that it is pretty hard for the girls to be in bed by 8 if we start baths at 8 (LOL!).
Going to bed early is something that I know I need to do just have not done. We started transitioning the girls to getting to bed earlier a couple of weeks ago so I decided to try to get to bed earlier myself. To help me get off into dream world, I had the pleasure of using a Sleep Scentsations Aromatherapy Pillow Liner.

Sleep Scentsations is a company that wants to create a relaxing spa experience in the bedroom! (Sign me up for that, I am a spa junkie). They offer aromatherapy pillow liners in a variety of scents to enhance your sleep experience. Instead of messy oils or sprays, you simply remove the protective backing and stick the Sleep Scentsations liner on your pillow under your pillow case!
I had the opportunity to try Relaxing Lavender. It was a classic blend of lavender and bergamot–it reminded me of laying on a massage table a spa–heavenly. The only thing missing was the masseuse. Sleep Scentsations reports that the scent lasts for about 4-7 days. It only lasted about 4 days for me. However, I still LOVED it and wished I had more! When I took it off, there was no residue! It really did help to put me in a more relaxed mood and I actually breathed better!
They actually sent me two samples! In honor of getting Mama in bed early just like the kiddes for back to school, I am giving away the other sample that they sent me. It is the “Day at the Beach” scent. Oooh, what a way to relax with a day at the beach!
