Post It Note Tuesday-Clean out the Weeds

Every spring, people get out and clean up their yards. One very important part of lawn care is taking care of weeds. A very simple method of combating weeds in your lawn is to overseed. Very interestingly, Jesus told a large group of people a story about seed: “The parable of the sower”. Matthew:13

A farmer went out to scatter seed in a field. 4While the farmer was scattering the seed, some of it fell along the road and was eaten by birds. 5Other seeds fell on thin, rocky ground and quickly started growing because the soil wasn’t very deep. 6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and dried up, because they did not have enough roots. 7Some other seeds fell where thornbushes grew up and choked out the plants. So they did not produce any grain. 8But a few seeds did fall on good ground where the plants grew and produced thirty or sixty or even a hundred times as much as was scattered.

He then explained the parable to the diciples:

What the farmer is spreading is really the message about the kingdom. 15The seeds that fell along the road are the people who hear the message. But Satan soon comes and snatches it away from them. 16The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it right away. 17But they don’t have any roots, and they don’t last very long. As soon as life gets hard or the message gets them in trouble, they give up. 18The seeds that fell among the thornbushes are also people who hear the message. 19But they start worrying about the needs of this life. They are fooled by the desire to get rich and to have all kinds of other things. So the message gets choked out, and they never produce anything. 20The seeds that fell on good ground are the people who hear and welcome the message. They produce thirty or sixty or even a hundred times as much as was planted.

Ouch! I have been the person at each station in Jesus’s story. I wish I could say that I was the person with the seed planted on “good ground” most of the time.

Although that is me sometime, I tend to live in the thornbushes or weeds. Sufing the net, laundry, bills, dance, soccer, Zumba, volunteering, cleaning, and WORK all seem to yell my name.

In fact, it has been hard for me to keep a clear thought. If I don’t put it in Outlook AND have it email me a reminder, it won’t happen.

How do I move from the thornbushes to “good ground”?

I guess taking a simple lesson learned in lawn care is in order. As mentioned earlier, one way to remove weeds in your lawn is by overseeding. Experts agree, overseeding your yard in the spring will not only guarantee you a lush, thick lawn throughout the entire summer, but will help to crowd any room for weeds to grow.
(Yeah just call me Mrs. Better Homes and Gardens (NOT)!!!)

I need to overseed (i.e. read more of the Word and spend more time in quiet time and prayer). To do this, I have to make reading and quiet time a priority. In the past, the early morning has been a very effective time for me to spend time with God. The house is quiet and I haven’t started running like a chicken yet.

For the past couple of months, I have been staying up surfing the net or watching TV, or just piddling. That means that it is near impossible for me to get up early to do ANYTHING. So, to clear out my weeds, I am going to make it a priority to go to bed at a decent time so that I can get up and OVERSEED! Are you on “good ground”?

Katrina, this is such a good reminder. The parable of the sower came to mind a few weeks back, but I didn't give it much thought. You really just broke it down into a very clear way to apply it to 2011 living. Hope upi have a great week!
