The Fishing Diva-Writer’s Workshop

This week, I am participating in Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop! One of the prompts from this week is: A Memorable fishing trip.

Craig Campbell has a song called “FISH”. It is a country song. When I first heard the song, I thought it was talking about something a little more risqué but when I listened some more, I figured out that the song was about fishing!

When asked about his song, Campbell said: “It’s all about me and my girl going fishing because that’s what she loves to do. The first part of the song is talking about how she’s never been. Then when we go, that’s all she wants to do from then on…”

Although the song has been out since April, I just recently heard it! When I did, it made me think about my first fishing experience! Let’s just say I didn’t have the same feelings about fishing as the girl in Craig Campbell’s song.

My first fishing experience was on a lake in Dixie Shores, North Carolina when I was in the eighth grade. My bestie, Lakeysier’s family had a lake house. Her father, (Mr. George) took us out on the boat during the day. I loved being out on the boat! When he said that we were going to fish, I was excited at first. Then I learned that you have to pick up a worm looking thing and then put it on the hook. That means that worm guts ooze out on your fingers. Ah, no thanks.

So, Mr. George had to bait my hook for me. Ok, so smooth sailing from there right? Well, not exactly. You see, you have to be quiet when you fish, or so they say because you will scare the fish away. Waiting on the fish bored me and I just couldn’t seem to keep quiet. So, I didn’t catch a thing.

Later that night, we went out on the dock and fished from there. This time, Mr. George gave me raw chicken liver to put on my hook. I could at least stomach the chicken liver.

Ok, so smooth sailing from there right? Well, yes! I felt a tug on my line. “I think I’ve got something I yelled!” “Reel it in!” Mr. George yelled. I tried but my rod was practically bent over. I had a BIG fish on my line!

Mr. George had to come over and help me. He even had to wrestle with it a little. We finally pulled in a huge catfish! I squealed with delight until Mr. George told me that I would have to take the hook out of its mouth.

Say what now? So I swallowed hard and picked up that fish. I held it out as far as I could from my body. It had a huge mouth and whiskers! Just as I got ready to try to pull the hook out, the fish hissed at me! I screamed and then tossed the fish and rod into the air and ran. I threw it so hard; the rod hit the roof of the shed on the dock!

Mr. George and Lakeysier STILL laugh at me about that night.

The chorus of Craig Campbell’s Fish Song is: “She wants to do it all the time / Early in the morning, in the middle of the night / She’s hooked / Now she can’t enough / Man, that girl sure loves to fish”.

If he were singing for me he would probably say: she couldn’t handle the slime/ Early in the morning, in the middle of the night / hooked a catfish that hissed/ she’s had enough, Man, leave this girl at home when you fish!

Luckily, Jesus calls us to fish differently:

Matthew 4:19 Jesus said to them, “Come with me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish”.

How funny. I've never gone fishing but I imagine I would have the same reaction! Stopping by from Mama Kat's
